The Sickos Committee’s Weather Travel and Football Master Almanac Network aka the SCWTFMAN - The Independents
Welcome to the Sickos Committee’s Weather, Travel & Football Master Almanac Network aka the SCWTFMAN.
Here at the SCWTFMAN we will attempt to forecast the upcoming 2024 college football season by using our Sickos Committee alert system. We’re going to do this in the Famer’s Almanac style. If you don’t know what a Farmers' Almanac is, basically it provides long-range weather predictions for both the U.S. and Canada. We will be applying our forecast to all of Division I in the United States. We’re trying to predict what the upcoming season holds for all Division I teams in college football using our Sickos Committee Weather Alert System.
First we will preview the 129 FCS teams in a conference by conference breakdown over the next coming weeks. Then we will get to the FBS.
Will these previews be long winded and incredibly in depth? No.
Will these previews be mostly based on “vibes” as assessed by the Sickos Committee weather forecasters? Yes.
Basically, we’re going to try to assess the team as a Sickos Warning, Watch or Advisory, give you their record last year, provide a little blurb about the team and for the FCS version to possibly advise you of any of their games against the FBS and interesting schedule tidbits. This year we’re also adding a conference specific thing but there isn’t a conference here!
So, we’re going to give you the closest band signed to a major independent record label!
FCS INDEPENDENTS
Merrimack Warriors
Where: Andover, MA
Last Year's Record: 5-6 (4-3 NEC)
Why Should You Care: Merrimack only made the jump to D1 in 2019 and has already seen incredible success in Basketball, Football and Soccer. 4 D1 Conference Titles in 4 years, all while Postseason ineligible. They, along with Sacred Heart, moved to the Non-Football MAAC in maybe the only realignment move this cycle driven by Basketball rather than football. Worth noting for both MC and SHU, the NEC had a scholarship limit of 43, 18 below the FCS limit. Now as an independent they can recruit much more aggressively. The late jump may not have given them enough time to do so for this season though.
Here’s the Merrimack vs the Monitor, because we could not post without mentioning it.
Sickos Forecast: Advisory - Has potential to turn into a warning real fast with a pair of FBS Opponents to start.
Potential Sickos Game(s): vs. Sacred Heart on November 16th for the “Conference Championship” of course, but also watch for @ Connecticut on September 7th.
Closest band signed to a major independent record label: If you had a pop punk phase, you may remember Andover's Boys Like Girls from their songs “The Great Escape” and “Love Drunk” from the mid-2000s. Well they're still around and now on Fearless Records.
Sacred Heart Pioneers
Where: Fairfield, CT
Last Year's Record: 2-9 (2-5 NEC)
Why Should You Care: Also making the leap over to the MAAC very late in the conference realignment cycle, The Pioneers have the chance to put up a very good record against a hastily assembled schedule despite not quite having the time to take advantage of the 18 new scholarship openings. Mike Nofri will be in his 12th year on the Pios sideline, with both Coordinators in their 7th. OC Matt Gardner ran a Ferentzian offence last year, and will need to improve to avoid Brian's fate.
Sickos Forecast: Watch - A relatively weak schedule with very little travel (furthest is a road game against Howard) could lead the Pios to turn in a very funny record either way
Potential Sickos Game(s): @ Merrimack on November 16th for the “Conference Championship” of course, but the two game swing of at Newly-DI Stonehill (Sep 21) and soon-to-be FBS Delaware (Sep 28) should be fun.
Closest band signed to a major independent record label: I asked my friend, a local and Sacred Heart grad for her help with this, and to paraphrase, “There is no music scene in Bridgeport and Fairfield. Quavo had a concert here and only 40 people showed up.” So we had to look 78 miles away to Willimantic, CT and steal some Eastern Connecticut State valor here. Epitaph Records’ The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die. (Which is also what i say after seeing the 12th 3 & out of the game in a driving snow)
